Family Sessions this September

New to September 2022, we will be running family sessions for young people and their significant adults. Our aim in these sessions is to bring children and adults together through exercise. We want to enable a safe environment for families to work together, encourage each other and learn from one another. We have partnered with Oxfordshire Youth's YouMove Activators to promote these activities. The YouMove program has been introduced to "offer free and low-cost activities for families across the county".  Therefore this programme gives families in receipt of free school meals access to activities ranging from badminton to weight lifting!

Working together

At The Project PT, our impact on the local community is hugely important to us. Firstly we want to ensure we are doing our best to promote healthy lifestyles. The ongoing health and financial crisis have also seen less fortunate communities suffer greatly, with, a lack of sports and mental health provisions. Through YouMove we want to offer an accessible initiative. We want to boost mental health and similarly encourage those, who may not ordinarily have access to fitness classes/equipment, to become more active.

Our team have designed the family sessions to be enjoyable whilst encouraging communication and positive feedback between families. We have therefore based the sessions around weight lifting and boxing. as they both encourage learning new skills and feelings of accomplishment! Weightlifting and boxing require people to communicate, allowing for new and existing relationships to flourish among the groups. We hope this will create a community vibe – one in which people will feel part of something. We hope this will lead to piquing people's interest in continuing this activity after the programme. A big factor for individuals not taking part in physical activity is 'lack of knowledge’. Our coaches will be there to build trusting relationships with all participants and offer guidance on technique.

Where to find the family sessions

The family sessions will take place at Barton Park Primary School and Barton Neighbourhood Centre over a 4 month period. We have chosen these locations to engage with communities that may not have access to such opportunities. This also allows us to continue building strong relationships with our local community. To strengthen this community tie, we have also partnered with the Oxford Food Hub. They have agreed to provide us with food for these sessions. By allocating time at the end of each session to talk and refuel, we hope that this will offer a further chance to discuss nutrition and offer advice on healthy diets.

We are really excited to start these family sessions! If you are interested in finding out more information, contact Sophie@theprojectpt.com
